Celebration of 130 years since Milutin Milanković's birth

The International symposium CLIMATE CHANGES AT THE ONSET OF THE SECOND DECADE OF THE PRESENT CENTURY will be opened by the occasional ceremony in the Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts on September 22 at 10 a.m.

This is, at the same time, the central celebration of the year of Milutin Milanković, declared by the Government of the Republic of Serbia which, just to remind, on that occasion established the Board for Marking the Jubilee of 130 years since the birth of Milutin Milanković, headed by academician Nikola Hajdin, the President of SASA, and the President of the Republic of Serbia, Mr. Boris Tadić as the general patron of the Jubilee.

As part of celebration of the year of Milutin Milanković, and one of the central manifestations, the Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts, will host, under the patronage of UNESCO, the following international scientific conference:

In the period September 22-25, 2009
This scientific meeting will also host twenty-some leading world scientists from the field of climate changes and works of Milutin Milanković

The Symposium will include the organization of the reception titled

„Following the Footsteps of Milutin Milanković“

that will be hosted by the Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts for young people who won the medals on the International Physics and Mathematics, Informatics and Astronomy Olympiads.
The reception will be held on Wednesday, on September 23, 2009, at 11.00 a.m. (SASA Club, mezzanine).
Taking into consideration the major works and world-wide acclaims of Milutin Milanković, as well as promotion of Serbian science and culture, we are free to ask you to announce to the public and adequately cover the said events within marking the Jubilee of Milutin Milanković as well as to interview the eminent world scientists who participate on the Symposium.

Opening speech at the central ceremony and opening of the International Symposium:

- Prof. Andre Berge, PhD President of the International Scientific Committee of the Symposium
- Patricia Bernal – Assistant Director-General of UNESCO
The speech will be followed by the concert of the violin trio “Dominante” of the Astronomical Society “Ruđer Bošković”.

On the occasion of marking 130 years since the birth of Milutina Milanković (1879-1958) the Government of the Republic of Serbia declared the year 2009 as the year of Milutin Milanković. Therefore, SASA will host the International Conference CLIMATE CHANGES AT THE ONSET OF THE SECOND DECADE OF THE PRESENT CENTURY, September 22-25. .

During the Symposium, the Astronomical Society “Ruđer Bošković” will be delivering for the wide audience the popular lectures on Milutin Milanković, and people can observe celestial bodies at night. The manifestation is called:

Wednesday, September 23, Prof. Jelena Milogradev-Turin, PhD: What We Give in Return to Milutin Milanković

Thursday, September 24. Goran Pavičić: On Life and Work of Milutin Milanković.

Friday, September 25. Nataša Stanić, M.A.: Milanković as a Propagator of Science: Through Universe and Centuries.


Observations from 8:30 p.m. to 10:p.m. from the Public Observatory Terrace
If the skies are clear, visitors could observe celestial bodies from the public observatory terrace during the all four days. The main “stars” of the evening are Jupiter with its satellites and the Moon. Name of the demonstrator is Nenad Trajković.
