Protection of the Serbian historical and cultural heritage in Kosovo and Metohija

The Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts expresses its concern over the attempts to present to UNESCO the Serbian historical and cultural heritage of Kosovo and Metohija, which is still alive, as cultural assets that should be reduced to the limits of administrative and territorial protection of monuments, as if such were the civilization heritage of a long-extinct people.
Taking into account a danger of far-reaching effects such attempts could have on understanding the historical development in this region, and having both globally-acknowledged experts in the issues of cultural heritage concerned and relevant digitalized documentation available, SASA informed the relevant government institutions on its perception of the situation on February 10, 2012. This perception, founded on the generally accepted methodological principles of science, was delivered to the National Commission for Cooperation with UNESCO, Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Ministry of Culture, Media and Information Society. It represents a defense plea for a scientific approach to the protection of Serbian medieval monuments and other cultural assets situated in Kosovo and Metohija.
