“Andrej Mitrovic” Award for the Best Doctoral Thesis in 2014 was bestowed on Indira Durakovic. This doctoral thesis titled “Healthcare Policy and Social Control in Serbia from 1890 to 1915” (Gesundheitspolitik und soziale Kontrolle in Serbien,1890-1915) was defended at the University of Graz in 2013 under the mentorship of Professor Karl Kaser, and this year it has been published as a book (Serbien und das Modernisierungsproblem. Die Entwicklung der Gesundheitspolitik und sozialen Kontrolle bis zum Ersten Weltkrieg, Peter Lang Verlag)

In her thesis Indira Durakovic (Tuzla, 1984) addressed the issue of creating a healthcare system in Serbia in the time of its modernization. It was a pioneer work dealing with social history of medicine in the entire region of Southeast Europe. The author's starting point was the importance of establishing national healthcare regulations as the essential base for the country's economic and social development. She was concerned with the forms of healthcare organization, epidemics impact on the formation of a healthcare system, enlightenment and hygiene routines, physicians etc.
The presentation of the award is to be held on December 3, 2014 at the University of Bonn.
