The Visit of Prof. Jaromir PASTOREK President of the Slovak Academy of Sciences

Belgrade, May 12-14, 2010
At the invitation of the Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts, Prof. Jaromir Pastorek, President of the Slovak Academy of Sciences paid a visit to Belgrade from May 12 to May 14, 2010.
The official meeting at SASA was attended by: academician Nikola Hajdin, President, academician Ljubisav Rakić, Vice-President, academician Nikola Tasić, Vice –President academician Dimitrije Stefanović, Secretary General, academician Zoran Maksimović, Secretary of the Department of Mathematics, Physics and Geo-Sciences, academician Petar Miljanić, Secretary of the Department of Technical Sciences, academician Veselinka Šušić, Secretary of the Department of Medical Sciences, academician Predrag Palavestra, Secretary of the Department of Languages and Literatures, academician Vojislav Stanovčić, Secretary of the Department of Social Sciences, academician Ljubomir Maksimović, Deputy Secretary of the Department of Historical Sciences. The talks were also attended by Dr. Gabrijela Kilianova, Director of the Ethnographic Institute of the Slovak Academy of Sciences and Dr. Dragana Radojčić, Director of the Ethnographic Institute of the Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts.
The Slovak Academy of Sciences is the oldest scientific organization in Slovakia which engages in basic and applied researches. The Academy is comprised of 69 institutes, 48 of which are financed from the budget, and 21 are subsidized. The Academy publishes 57 scientific and expert journals and 8 yearbooks. The researches are carried out within three sections: section I where Physics, Universe, Geo-Science, and Engineering Sciences are studied; section II that includes Biological, Chemical and Medical Sciences and Environmental Studies, and Section III where Humanities, Social Sciences, Art and Culture are studied. Furthermore, a number of institutes provide consulting services to the Government, Ministries and Government Agencies. The Institutes of the Slovak Academy of Sciences actively participate in the FP-7 Program of the European Union.
Representatives of SASA acquainted the guests with the activities and programs of the Academy, as well as with the engagement of Departmental and Interdepartmental Committees and projects financed from the Fund for Academy's Scientific-Research work. All the participants in the talks reached mutual consent in respect of commencement of making the new Agreement on Scientific Cooperation between the two Academies whose pillar would be joint scientific projects that would be proposed by the SASA Departments. Both sides demonstrated interest and necessity for collaboration in the domain of humanities, status of minorities in both countries, as well as within the field of mathematics, physics, new materials and geo-sciences. Two sides also agreed that two to three projects of the common interest for both countries, and which would be supported by the Governments of Slovakia and Serbia, should be proposed.
The institutions within the two Academies are entitled to enter an inter-institutional agreement. One of the principal collaboration modalities would be the exchange of PhD students.
It is agreed that the Academies should consider preparing a joint application to the European Union Funds.
