Professor Sven Gustavsson

On Wednesday, February 13, 2013 we were notified by Professor Kjell Magnusson, from Uppsala, that on February 12, 2013 professor Sven Gustavsson, prominent Swedish expert in Slavic studies and member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Letters, History and Antiquities from Stockholm, passed away in a hospital in Uppsala. Professor Gustavsson was one of the leading Scandinavian experts in Slavic Languages and Literatures, one of the founders of the Nobel Swedish-Serbian Symposium which was held alternately in Stockholm and Belgrade, as a type of scientific cooperation between the Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts and the Royal Swedish Academy of Letters, History and Antiquities.

The first joint gathering of the Swedish-Serbian Symposium was held in Stockholm in 1987 and was attended by numerous Swedish and Serbian academicians, university professors and experts and dealt with the topic: “Tradition and Modern Society”. The second gathering was held in Belgrade, Kopaonik and Studenica in 1990, immediately before the civil war and dealt with the social responsibility in science and intelligence. The third symposium titled: “Stockholm-Belgrade Sustainable Development” was held in Stockholm in 2004, and the fourth one, under the similar title: “Belgrade-Stockholm- Sustainable Development and the Role of Humanistic Disciplines”, was held in Belgrade in 2008. The fifth symposium was also organized by Prof. Sven Gustavsson, on the Swedish part, and was titled: “Sweden-Serbia and Europe – Periphery or No?” held in Stockholm at the end of 2012. Each of the gatherings were attended by 8-10 academicians, university professors and experts in humanistic studies – history, sociology, economics, demography, literature, religion, ethnology, architecture, spatial planning, urban planning, European integrations, centre and periphery, etc.

Prof. Sven Gustavsson is to be given credit for the direct result of foreign scientific cooperation of the Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts realized in the establishment of a special fellowship for PhD studies and PhD candidates from Serbia granted by the Royal Swedish Academy of Letters, History and Antiquities, which was awarded for the first time in 2012. Academician Prof. Sven Gustavsson is to be given unquestionable and great credit for bringing closer, familiarization and cooperation between the Swedish and Serbian culture and cultural tradition, particularly language and literature.
