RETHINKING MUSICAL MODERNISM

International musicological conference

Belgrade, 11–13 October 2007

The idea to organize this conference was motivated by the wish to address some important problems connected to confusingly diverse interpretations of musical modernism. It was expected that by investigating the origins of musical modernism and its characteristics at different periods, it would be possible to gain a deeper insight into the meaning of musical modernism both in Europe and the wider world. It was therefore welcomed that the papers presented at the conference focussed on terminology, periodization, the relationship of musical modernism with the avant-garde and postmodernism, the role of ideologies, the reception of modernism among composers in ‘peripheral’ countries, the question of folklore in modernist music.

The language of the conference was English. The papers will be published as conference proceedings.
