Astronomy in Serbia, Serbia in the International Astronomical Union

On the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the foundation of the International Astronomical Union, a scientific gathering titled “Astronomy in Serbia, Serbia in the International Astronomical Union” will be opened on Thursday, 16 May, at 10 a.m., at the SASA Grand Hall.

The International Astronomical Union (IAU) was founded as a part of the International Research Council (now International Science Council (ISC)) formed by the First World War winner countries. The Kingdom of Yugoslavia officially joined the IAU at the congress in Paris, in 1935. Today, the IAU has 13 533 members in more than 100 states.

The first part of the gathering “Astronomy in Serbia, Serbia in the International Astronomical Union” is dedicated to Serbia’s membership in the IAU. The establishment of this organization, Yugoslavia’s inclusion, as well as our renowned representatives – Vojislav Mišković and Milutin Milanković will be discussed.

The gathering will be attended by lecturers from eminent institutions where astronomical research is carried out. The Faculty of Mathematics of the University of Belgrade and the Astronomical Observatory of Belgrade (AOB) are organizers of this event.
