Lecture on the history and culture of the Roma

On the occasion of the International Roma Day, Kalin Rus is scheduled to give a lecture titled “Community Empowerment through the Expansion of Knowledge about the History of Roma Men and Women”, at the SASA Grand Hall, on Thursday, 11 April, at 5 p.m. The lecture is organized by the Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts in cooperation with the Office of the Council of Europe in Belgrade and the ROMACTED Programme of the Council of Europe. Kalin Rus is a director of the Intercultural Institute from Timisoara and international expert on inclusion and education of children and adults and Roma culture.

SASA Board for the Study of Life and Customs of the Roma was founded 30 years ago. Eminent experts and a considerable number of Roma intellectuals have been included in its work since the beginning, and provided significant contribution to the research about life, culture, language and social position of the Roma. Improving knowledge and raising awareness have important roles in the fight against, unfortunately, widely spread stereotypes and bias against Roma people.

Through its programmes, the Council of Europe has been dedicated to the knowledge transfer about the suffering of the Roma and the position of particularly vulnerable groups within Roma communities, as well as to the fight against racism and anti-Gypsism with the emphasis on development of programmes for inclusive education and human rights studies.
