Scientific conference ’Intellectuals, Yesterday and Today’

A two-day international scientific conference titled ’Intellectuals, Yesterday and Today’ opens at the SASA Grand Hall, on Thursday, 24 November, at 10 a.m.

Bearing in mind that social, economic, political, technological and cultural conditions of intellectual presentation have profoundly shifted, it has become inevitable to reconsider its emerging position. This is both a current and explosive issue, which grants fresh, critical reflection on the present moment.

There are various interpretations of intellectuals’ discourse devices, starting with high expectations to their complete disregard. A broad, open, many-sided discussion on possibilities, opportunities and pressure numerous intellectuals undergo, has proved to be called for.

Is it still possible to affirm the classical-modernist pattern of criticism? How do intellectuals position themselves when the discursive context of the public is changing? What is the attitude of intellectuals towards expert culture dynamics? Do classical intellectuals still exist, or are they a part of the irrevocable past? How do modern intellectuals come to terms with the contradictions that hamper their presentation? Is the intellectual as a modernity hero bound to disappear? Are there universal intellectuals, or are intellectuals destined to become specific intellectuals, linked to certain particular fields? What is the relation of intellectuals towards the epoch described by many as a ‘post-truth’ phenomenon, a pattern which legitimizes reasoning and public imagining?
