Scientific conference ’Nuclear Power Plants in Serbia’s Energy Sector – Demands, Possibilities, Perspectives’

The scientific conference titled ’Nuclear Power Plants in Serbia’s Energy Sector – Demands, Possibilities, Perspectives’, organized by the SASA Board for Energy, opens at the SASA Grand Hall, on Tuesday, 22 November, at 9.30 a.m. The conference aims to offer independent, competent and factual concepts which can be a basis for further decision-making on Serbia’s energy transition.

Former decisions on the development of the Serbian energy sector and choices of alternative resources have brought about base resource power plants neglect and a considerable decrease in production, as well as the import energy resources dependency. Humongous expenses on electrical energy imports lead to the depression of the Serbian energy sector, and endangerment of the population and industry, pushing the country into an uncertain position. Serbian wind power plants have been exempt from numerous duties which are in force across EU countries, and investors enjoy privileges while generating considerable revenue. Nevertheless, it has been demonstrated in practice that renewable energy is insufficient, well under the expected or required amounts. The organizers perceive the need to determine the role that nuclear power could play in Serbia in the following decades. A stable and strong country requires an accessible and steady energy supply, therefore nuclear energy power plants are closely linked to vital state issues. The authors and participants will try to present an overview of the positive and negative effects of the work of nuclear power plants, and consider the impact of new facilities construction in the region and Serbia. In addition to the overview of domestic staff potential, previous project designs and available technological resources, the technology of nuclear fission reactors, which are currently in the developmental phase and have the potential to take off in the next decades and become widely accepted, will be discussed.
