The Role of Nuclear Energy in Energy Transition

A scientific conference titled ’ The Role of Nuclear Energy in Energy Transition’, which is to be held at the SASA Grand Hall, on Monday, 2 November, at 9.30, is one in a series dedicated to the reaffirmation and expansion of knowledge necessary for qualified deliberation and decision-making on the development directions of Serbian energy. It was preceded by scientific conferences ’The Condition and Perspectives of Serbian Energy ’ (SASA, June 2017) and ’Energy and Climate Changes’ (SASA, November 2018).  The topics of the upcoming conferences encompass energy efficiency, the issue of integration of renewable energy resources, natural gas potential and the issues of digitalization in energy.

In a world facing a deficit of credible leadership and ever-growing populism, short-term, interest-driven and unsubstantiated decisions and policies are being promoted. Such an approach is in direct conflict with a long-term nature of energy systems and energy economy, therefore the leverage of Serbian science and profession on the decision-making process on Serbian energy should be strengthened thus the risks of a hasty coerced decision made without consulting domestic experts and institutions could be reduced. The organizers have recognized the need for productive dialogue and they believe that the communication between consumers, the economy, the profession and the state should be improved.

The agenda of the conference includes eight thematic lectures followed by a discussion and deduction. The discussion on nuclear energy will be focused on the analysis of the effects and risks associated with nuclear power plants already operating in the environment, as well as the assessment of the effects and risks of the possible use of nuclear power plants in Serbia.
