Ceremonial Session Commemorating the Centennial of Academician Milutin Stefanović

Organized by the SASA Department of Chemical and Biological Sciences, the ceremonial session marking the 100th anniversary of the birth of Academician Milutin Stefanović (1924-2009) will be held on Wednesday, 27 November, at 11 a.m. at the SASA Grand Hall. He was a professor of the Faculty of Chemistry of the University of Belgrade and a pioneer in steroid chemistry, biochemistry and phytochemical research.

His extensive scientific opus includes chemistry and transformation of steroids to get more complex and pharmaceutically significant products. He followed up this type of interest from his post-doctoral studies in Paris, where he worked on steroid hormones and alkaloid synthesis in research laboratories of one of the most renowned French pharmaceutical factories Roussel-Uclaf and the Institute Les Laboratoires Francais de Chemiotherapie. His interest in pharmaceutical applications of steroid compounds and alkaloids expanded through cooperation with domestic pharmaceutical companies, as well as with research expansion to microbiological transformations of steroids.

During his study stay, he began his phytochemical research in 1969 in the laboratories of Prof. T. A. Geissman in the USA, where he worked on the isolation and determination of the structures of natural compounds. Upon returning, he focused his new interests on his collaborators and students, thus practically starting the work of the so-called Belgrade phytochemical school.
