The Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts takes great honor in the fact that its foreign membership included such giants of science, literature and art as Russian chemist and inventor Dmitri Ivanovich Mendeleev; Nobel Prize Winner in Literature Mikhail Aleksandrovich Sholokhov; Yugoslav-Swiss Nobel Prize Winner in Chemistry Leopold Ružička; Russian composer Dmitri Dmitriyevich Shostakovich; famous writer, dissident and Nobel Laureate Aleksandr Isayevich Solzhenitsyn; Polish-American poet, prose writer and Nobel Laureate Czesław Miłosz; German writer, philologist and originator of German Studies Jacob Grimm; the most important representative of Romanticism, French writer Victor Hugo; Russian physicist and Nobel Laureate Pyotr Leonidovich Kapitsa; Czech composer and conductor Antonín Dvořák; British sculptor Henry Moore; and one of the world’s greatest writers, Leo Nikolaevich Tolstoy.
