Founder and director of the Institute for Physical Problems of the USSR Academy of Sciences and professor of the Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology (1947–); assistant director of Magnetic Research at Cavendish Laboratory at the University of Cambridge from 1924 to 1932, director of the Mond Laboratory, Royal Society (1930–1940)
