MOMČILO ST. MOKRANJAC – CHEMIST, PROFESSOR AND TOXICOLOGIST

This year marks 120 years of Momčilo St. Mokranjac’s birth (1899 – 1967), a chemist, professor and toxicologist, whose contribution to the development of pharmacy in Serbia is immeasurable. Distinguished in international circles, Momčilo St. Mokranjac laid down the foundations of the Serbian and Yugoslav toxicology, leaving a profound mark on the most important domestic scientific institutions such as the Faculty of Pharmacy in Belgrade, Belgrade School of Medicine and former SASA Institute of Chemistry.

Visitors will be able to see the original documents and photographs from professor Momčilo St. Mokranjac’s life and work, as a chemists of State Chemical Laboratory, head of Department for testing of precious metals of the National Bank of the state of that period, professor and director of the Institute of Toxicological Chemistry at the Faculty of Pharmacy in Belgrade, as well as relevant publications which include the first textbook on toxicological chemistry in Serbian “Toxicological Chemistry”(1949) written after the fashion of the French textbook literature.

The goal of the exhibition is to shed light on his character and work, and remind the general public of another giant coming from the Mokranjac family.
