The Society of Serbian Letters
(1851-1855)

1851.
	6 January	Cyprien Robert reported on the results of his work compiling a list of Serbian manuscripts and books in Parisian archives and libraries, and provided information on Bertrandon de la Broquière’s manuscript. (Archives, DSS, 96)
	26 June	The Theatre Board for the construction of a theatre building was formed and it included Atanasije Nikolić, Matija Ban, Đorđe Maletić and others.
	16 November	Đorđe Cenić, editor of Glasnik, proposed establishing orthographic rules which were to be used in the Society’s editions. Jovan Stejić soon produced Praktična pravila srpskog pravopisa [Practical Rules of Serbian Orthography] (Gl. DSS 4 (1852) 4 -15).
	16 November	The Society issued a call for the collection of historical material through the newspapers Novine srpske. Janko Šafarik published a book titled Opisanije starih srpskih novaca [Descriptions of Old Serbian Coins] (Gl. DSS 3 (1851) 191-259).
	16 November	In cooperation with the Society, its corresponding member Pavel Jozef Šafárik published a book titled Izbor jugoslavjanskih dostopamjatnosti [Monuments of Old Literature of the Southern Slavs].

1852.
	28 February	Jovan Steijić put forward a proposal on the Serbian Dictionary and Serbian Grammar (Gl. DSS 5 (1853) 1-13).

1853.
	9 May	The Society invited Josif Pančić to undertake a botanical tour of Serbia and provided him with funds.
	15 September	A new charter on the organisation of the Serbian Lyceum was adopted, based on a draft by Platon Simonović.
	15 September	The Society provided Stefan Verković, a collector of antiquities in European Turkey, with 250 forints to purchase old manuscripts and coins.(Gl. DSS 6 (1855) 330).

1854.
	30 September	The Society urged the Ministry of Education to increase penalties for the destruction of historical monuments.
	15 September	Josif Pančić submitted his 12-volume work, titled Flora Srpska ili Samorastije [Serbian Flora or Self-Grown Plants], based on materials which he had collected across Serbia between 1846 and 1854. (Archives, DSS, 180)
	15 September	Cicero’s book De Officiis [On Duties], translated by G. Lazić, was published. The Society reached an agreement with the Zemun bookstore Soprona to sell the Society’s publications

1855.
	24 February	At the suggestion of Milovan Janković, a call was issued to Serbian men of letters, priests and teachers to record words that were not included in Vuk’s Dictionary.
	8 April	The Society was granted a permission to import a number of copies of Vuk’s Dictionary.
	8 April	The publication titled Deržavopis Serbie [Statistics of Serbia] by Vladimir Jakšić was published. The first telegraph line between Belgrade-Aleksinac in Serbia was inaugurated.
