1856.
	9 April	Vladimir Jakšić published Uputstvo za merenje, osmatranje i beležnje meteoroloških podataka [Manual for Measuring, Observing and Recording Meteorological Data in Serbia]. (Gl. DSS 8 (1856), 294–305)
	15 May	The Ministry decided to relocate the Society from the Lyceum premises to the house of Vaja Ilić in the Abadžija district.

1857.
	13 January	Đura Daničić was elected a secretary of the Society.
	31 October	Josif Šafarik reported on his research into Serbian historical monuments in the Venice State Archives.  (Gl. DSS 9 (1857) 292-307)
	31 October	During the year, the Society collected a number of old manuscripts, copies, antiques and coins and banknotes.

1858.
	29 May	The Secretary of the Society, Đura Daničić, had a disagreement with the Minister of Education, Dimitrije Crnobarac, over orthographic rules to be used in diplomas for newly elected members.
	31 May	The Minister issued an ordinance requiring the Society to adhere to the official orthographic norms.
	8 June	The Society refused to comply with the ordinance.
	15 June	Vuk Karadžić participated in the work of an assembly and the Society denounced the old orthographic rules that it had once prescribed. The dispute over orthography was published in detail in Rasprava između pređašnje Vlade i Društva Srpske Slovesnosti [A Debate between the Former Government and the Society of Serbian Letters](Gl. DSS 11 (1859) 463-481).
	15 June	Srpska sintaksa [Serbian Syntax] by Đura Daničić and Spomenici Srbski od 1395 do 1423 [Serbian Monuments from 1395 to 1423 ] by Medo Pucić were published.

1859.
	23 November	The Minister and President of the Society, Dimitrije Matić, revoked the decrees on orthography issued in 1832, 1850 and 1852, which had prohibited not only the printing but also the import of books printed according to different orthographic rules.

1860.
	10 January	Crown Prince Mihailo attended the main session and, in his speech, took the Society’s side in the dispute over orthography.
	10 January	In Glasnik 12, Daničić and Pančić published their works written in Vuk’s orthography. Josif Šafarik published the first volume of Srpski spomenici Mletačkog arhiva [Serbian Monuments from the Venice State Archives], with the support of Đura Daničić. The Society published Život Svetog Save [The Life of Saint Sava] by Domentijan.

1861.
	29 November	Đura Daničić resigned from the post of secretary due to insurmountable difficulties surrounding the publication of Rječnik iz književnih starina srpskih [Dictionary of Serbian Literary Antiquities]
