Academician Dragan Micić Passed Away
It is with great regret that the Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts announces the passing of Academician Dragan Micić, who passed away at the age of 76 on 5 April 2025 in Belgrade. Born in Belgrade on 13 January 1950, he was one of the foremost Serbian experts in the field of endocrinology.
He graduated from the Faculty of Medicine in Belgrade in 1974, with an average grade of 9,68. He also obtained his Master’s Degree in 1977 and defended his Doctoral Dissertation in 1981 at the same faculty. In 1976, he got a position at the Clinic for Internal Medicine A in Belgrade. He completed his residency in internal medicine in 1981 and his fellowship in endocrinology in 1983.
He pursued specialised training at the University Clinic in Ulm in 1981, St Bartholomew’s Hospital in London in 1986, and the Middlesex Hospital in Boston in 1987 and 1988. He also undertook further training at the Joslin Diabetes Centre and the Peter Bent Brigham Hospital, Harvard University, as well as at the Steno Memorial Hospital in Copenhagen in 1998 and Aker University Hospital in Oslo in 2010. In 1994, he completed the European Federation of Endocrine Societies’ Postgraduate Course in Endocrinology in Spain.
He advanced through all academic ranks at the Faculty of Medicine in Belgrade, following his election as a full professor in 1996. At his alma mater, he served as a Vice-Dean for regular and specialised studies, as well as the Head of the Department for Post-Graduate Studies in endocrinology.
He held the position of the Head of the Clinic for Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolic Diseases at the Clinic Centre of Serbia (CCS). He carried out the duties of the Head of the Department for Obesity, Metabolic and Reproductive Disorders at the CCS, as well as the Head of the Obesity Centre at CCS. Furthermore, he was a member of the CCS Scientific Council, assistant director of the Clinical Centre of Serbia for Internal Medicine, the Chairman of the Board of Directors at the Institute for Thyroid Gland and Metabolism in Zlatibor and the Institute for Rheumatology in Belgrade. He also served as the President of the Health Council of Serbia and the Serbian Association for the Study of Obesity.
In 2003, he was elected a SASA Corresponding Member, while in 2009, he became its full member. From 23 December 2015, he served as the Secretary of the Department of Medical Sciences of the Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts. Within SASA, he was the President of the SASA Board for Endocrinology and a member of various boards, including the Board for the Influence of Environmental Factors, Board for Cardiovascular Pathology, Board for Human Reproduction, Board for Multidisciplinary Research of Diabetes, Academy Board for Biomedical Research and Academy Board for the Serbian Issue.
In 1998, he was elected a foreign fellow of the New York Academy of Sciences, and since 2014, he had been a member of the Academy of Medical Sciences of the Serbian Medical Society. In 2004, he was appointed a SCOPE fellow by the International Association for the Study of Obesity in London. From 2011 to 2017, he served as Vice President of the European Association for the Study of Obesity (EASO), based in London. He chaired the Expert Commission for Endocrinology of the Republic of Serbia and was a member of the University of Belgrade Council.
As a visiting professor, he had taught at the Medical University of Cluj (Romania) since 2007 and at the Cerrahpasa Faculty of Medicine, University of Istanbul (Turkey), since 2014. His scientific contributions had a considerable impact on the scientific community
His field of study included insulin-independent and insulin-dependent diabetes, insulin resistance, obesity, diseases of the adrenal cortex, thyroid gland and pituitary gland. His extensive bibliography includes over 220 scientific papers published in international journals and monographs, over 150 professional and scientific papers published in national journals, 100 chapters in national monographs, and about 50 chapters in scientific conference proceedings. Academician Micić’s works have been cited more than 7,000 times. He led or participated as a team member in several scientific research projects. He served as the editor-in-chief and was a member of the editorial boards of several scientific journals, including: Acta Clinica, Medicinska istraživanja, Acta Physiologica et Pharmacologica, Obesity and Metabolism, etc.
He was a member of the leading national and international professional associations such as the Serbian Medical Society, the European Association for the Study of Diabetes (EASD), the International Diabetes Federation (IDF), the American Diabetes Association (ADA), the European Neuroendocrine Association (ENEA), the European Association for the Study of Obesity (EASO) and the International Association for the Study of Obesity (IASO). He gained recognition as one of the leading experts both in Serbian and international endocrinology.
He was a recipient of the Vuk Vrhovac Annual Award for Scientific Work in Diabetology of 1981, as well as the Annual Award for Scientific Paper by the Serbian Medical Society (Belgrade, 1999). The Romanian Association for Diabetes, Diet and Metabolic Disorders honoured him with the Diabetes Honoris Causa Award in 2015.
Through his expert, educational, and scientific work, he left an indelible mark on the development of medical science, particularly in the field of endocrinology.
His passing represents a great loss for the Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts, as well as for the entire Serbian society.
