Academician Eugen Simion, SASA foreign member, wins award

Academician Eugen Simion, former president of the Romanian Academy and SASA foreign associate member, is the winner of the Gold Medal of Philology for 2018. The medal is equivalent to the Nobel Prize in literature and is bestowed by the International Society of Philology. The list of its previous winners includes Noam Chomsky, Umberto Eco, Yuri Lotman, Roman Jacobson, and others.

Academician Simion, a renowned Romanian literary critic and historian, currently presides over the Department of Philology and Literature of the Romanian Academy. He is also member of the Royal Danish Academy of Sciences and Letters, a corresponding member of the Academy of Moral and Political Sciences of France, an honorary member of the Academy of Sciences of Moldova, and, of late, a foreign associate member of the Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts.
