Academician Vojislav Marić passed away

It is with great sorrow that the Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts announces the death of the full member of the Department of Mathematics, Physics and Geosciences Professor Dr Vojislav Marić aged 91 (b. Novi Sad, 12 January 1930) on 1 August 2021 in Novi Sad. He left an indelible mark in the field of mathematical analysis, having contributed to the development of education and scientific work in mathematics at the Faculty of Technical Sciences of the University of Novi Sad.

He received his BSc from the Faculty of Sciences and Mathematics of the University of Belgrade in 1952, while his PhD he obtained from the Faculty of Philosophy of the University of Sarajevo in 1957. He had tenure at the University of Novi Sad since 1955. He was elected a full professor at the Faculty of Technical Sciences in Novi Sad in 1971. With his ideas and commitment, he greatly contributed to the development of the Faculty of Technical Sciences – from a humble Faculty of Mechanical Engineering to the largest and one of the most distinguished faculties in Serbia. For his work, he was awarded Charter with recognition by the University of Novi Sad in 1955, and recognition of appreciation by the Faculty in 2000.

In 1987, he was elected a corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences and Arts of Vojvodina (VANU), a corresponding member of SASA in 1991, while he was elected a full member of the SASA in 2000. He was the secretary of the SASA Branch in Novi Sad in the period 1995-2015, a member of the SASA Publishing Board, Statute Commission and the Expert Council of the SASA Gallery. He was a member of the European Academy of Sciences and Arts from Salzburg, and the Academy of Nonlinear Sciences in Moscow.

Academician Marić was a visiting professor at multiple universities in the world, some of which are as follows: Stanford University, USA; Madison Mathematics Research Centre, Wisconsin, USA; University of Kentucky, USA; the University of Florence, Istituto Matematico ‘Ulisse Dini’; Fukuoka University; and he also gave lectures as a guest of the British Council at Oxford University, University of Dundee, Strathclyde University (Glasgow), and the University of St Andrews.

He was a member of the Mathematical Society of Serbia, American Mathematical Society and European Mathematical Society. He worked as an editor in the field of mathematics, physics, astronomy for Srpska enciklopedija [Serbian Encyclopedia] and Srpski biografski rečnik [Serbian Biographical Dictionary]. Several international journals had him review scientific papers and he was a long-time contributor to the reference journals Zentralblatt für Mathematik and Mathematical Reviews, for which he had written dozens of reviews. He was a member of the editorial board of the edition ‘Sabrana dela Jovana Karamate’ [Collected Works of Jovan Karamata] and he compiled the book ‘Jovan Karamata: Selected Papers’.

He is a recipient of the October Prize of the City of Novi Sad, 1971; Vojvodina Liberation Award, 1989; Charter and Recognition Award for lifetime achievement of Association of University Professors and Scientists of Serbia in Novi Sad, 2002.

His passing represents a great loss for the Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts and overall Serbian science.
