Accession speech of SASA Foreign Member Nicos Macris

‘From Hooke’s ‘Hanging Chain’ and Milankovitch’s ‘Druckkurve’ to a Variational Formulation: The Adventure of the Thrust Line of Masonry Arches’ is the title of the accession speech which is to be delivered by SASA Foreign Member Nicos Makris, a professor of civil engineering of Southern Methodist University in Dallas on Tuesday, 22 April, at the SASA Grand Hall, at noon.

Professor Dr Nicos Makris (born in Athens in 1965) is an internationally recognised expert in the field of civil engineering, with notable contributions in earthquake engineering, the protection of structures from seismic activity, the renewal of civil engineering heritage, and applied and theoretical mechanics. He has significantly contributed to the history of Serbian science by drawing international attention to Milutin Milanković’s work on the stability of masonry arches. In particular, he demonstrated that Milanković had provided a previously overlooked solution to this engineering problem in two papers published in 1904 and 1907.

Professor Dr Nicos Makris has received numerous awards and recognitions for his professional undertakings.

In November 2024, he was elected a foreign member of the Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts.
