Centenary of the Birth of Academician Pavle Ilić
A ceremonial session marking the 100th anniversary of Academician Pavle Ilić’s birth will take place on Tuesday, 17 December, at noon, at the SASA Grand Hall.
Academician Pavle Ivić was born in 1924 in Belgrade. He graduated from the Faculty of Philosophy of the University of Belgrade, the Department of Yugoslav Literature and Serbo-Croat Language, where he also gained his doctorate in 1954. He began his teaching career at the Faculty of Philosophy in Novi Sad, where he worked since its foundation in 1954 and was elected full professor in 1964. From 1972 until his early retirement in 1975, he lectured at the Faculty of Philology in Belgrade. In 1972, he was elected a SASA corresponding member, and six years later he became its full member. He was an honorary member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and was elected a foreign member to six more academies.
Within SASA, he served as a president and a member of several scientific and inter-academy boards, as well as a member of numerous scientific associations both in the country and abroad. He was also an editor or a member of editorial boards of leading scientific journals and notable publications of renowned international journals. Academician P. Ivić participated in multiple scientific conferences in the country and across the globe, held lectures at the universities of Europe, America, Asia and Australia, and headed capital linguistic projects. He received several awards and accolades for his scientific work.
Serbian linguistics of the second half of the 20th century was marked by Academician Pavle Ilić. He left an enduring legacy in Serbian and world linguistics with his research studies, encompassing a wide range of topics such as dialectology, history of the Serbian language as his primary fields of interest, comparative linguistics, linguistic geography, language typology, phonology, onomastics, etymology, standardology and language planning. Together with Academician Milka Ivić, he laid the foundation of the world-famous Novi Sad linguistic school.
