Ceremonial gathering – 125 years since the birth of Risto Stijović

On the occasion of 125 years since the birth of sculptor Risto Stijović, the ceremonial gathering is to be held at the SASA Grand Hall, on Monday, 18 November, at 11 a.m.

Academician Svetomir Arsić Basara will give an opening address, followed by a lecture of Professor Jasna Jovanov titled ’Risto Stijović, from Parisian Alleys to Luxor Palace’. After that, a museum advisor Vera Grujić will talk about works of Risto Stijović from the National Museum in Belgrade, while Nikola Kusovac will speak on the topic ’My Encounters with Risto Stijović’. The RTS film based on Vera Ristić’s screenplay, entitled Risto Stijović will also be screened.

Academician Risto Stijović was a sculptor, whose works have been displayed at the most significant museums and collections. He was born in Podgorica in 1894, and in 1912 he enrolled in the Sculpting department of the Serbian Painting School.  He joined the Serbian Army in the First World War and participated in the retreat across Albania. From 1916, he received his education at French art schools, first in Marseille, then in Paris. He regularly exhibited at French salons. He returned to Belgrade at the end of the 1920s, where he worked as a teacher in the Third Male Gymnasium. He was a member of various artistic associations. He received the Grand Prix for sculpture at the 1937 Paris International Exposition. He passed away in Podgorica, on 20 December 1974.
