Ceremonial session dedicated to the 125th anniversary of the birth of Academician Ksenofon Šahović

A ceremonial session dedicated to the 125th anniversary of the birth of Academician Ksonofon Šahović will be held at the SASA Grand Hall, on Wednesday, 26 April, starting at 9.30 a.m. Ksenofon Šahović (b. Ohrid, 7 January 1898 – d. Paris 5 January 1956), a renowned physician, pathologist and a professor at the University of Belgrade, graduated in medicine and natural sciences from the University of Lyon. He defended both doctoral dissertations in medicine and natural sciences at the same university, in 1922.

In the year 1923, he became an assistant professor of experimental pathology at the Institute of Pathology, at the Faculty of Medicine in Belgrade. He was elected to all university positions, including the position of a full professor in 1940.

During the Second World War, he was imprisoned in the Banjica camp.

He was elected a corresponding member of the Serbian Royal Academy in 1940, and a full member of the Serbian Academy of Sciences in 1948.

He was the founder of numerous important institutions and scientific journals. Together with Professor Đorđe Joaanović, he founded the Yugoslav Society for the Study and Treatment of Cancer in 1927, it having been the fourth such a society in the world. Academician Šahović also founded the Institute of Pathological Physiology at the Belgrade Faculty of Medicine.

In 1947, he launched the Institute of Pathological Physiology of the Serbian Academy of Sciences (SAS), which, in 1954, was transformed into the Department of Experimental and Clinical Pathology of the newly established Institute for Medical Research of SAS. As a chairman of this institution, he carried out a number of research papers in the fields of experimental oncology, transplantations of endocrine glands and hypothermia.

He was one of the founders of the Faculty of Dental Medicine in Belgrade and the first rector of the Faculty of Medicine of the Belgrade Higher School.

With his experimental scientific papers, which were published in various domestic and foreign scientific journals, as well as with the organization of the first experimental research in Serbian medicine, Academician Šahović greatly contributed to the development of our medical sciences. He was a progenitor of the study of pathological physiology and one of the pioneers in setting up the foundations of experimental medicine in our country.

The ceremonial session is organized by the Department of the Medical Sciences of the Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts.
