Dositej Obradović Bust Presentation

A ceremony of presentation of a bust of Dositej Obradović, whose donor is the Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts, is to be held at the Martin Luther University in Halle, on 27 April 2023.

Academician Miodrag Marković, SASA vice-president, will then present Dositej Obradović’s bust, i.e. its replica by Petar Ubavkić, from the SASA Art Collection, which can be located in the lobby of the SASA Grand Hall. As part of the ceremony, the exhibition titled ‘Vuk Stefanović Karadžić – Roaming through Central Germany’ will be open, bearing in mind that this year marks 200 years since Vuk Karadžić stayed in Halle. Thus, both our great figures will be honoured on the same day.

This event was brought about by the Embassy of the Republic of Serbia in the Federal Republic of Germany, in an effort to raise awareness in local communities about the existence of cultural and educational ties between Serbia and Germany, which date back a hundred years. Let’s just remember that, in addition to German and Serbian culture having been enriched by the friendship and cooperation of larger-than-life men, such as Vuk Karadžić‘s cooperation with Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, the Brothers Grimm, other important figures of our culture and history, such as Laza Lazarević, Mihajlo Pupin, Nadežda Petrović, etc. had a lasting effect on Germany. Dositej Obradović, who spent some time studying in Halle, is certainly one of the figures who left an indelible mark on the Serbian culture with his great works, having been cultivated at the fountain of German scientific thought.
