EXHIBITION MARKING THE 20th ANNIVERSARY OF NEW ARCHAEOLOGICAL INVESTIGATIONS OF THE NEOLITHIC SITE OF VINČA

JULY 3 – AUGUST 10, 2018

Authors: Prof. Nenad Tasić, PhD, and Kristina Penezić
Organizers: Center for Digital Archaeology of the Faculty of Philosophy, Belgrade, and SASA Gallery of Science and Technology

The exhibition, Archaeological Forensics – 20 Years of New Archaeological Investigations of Vinča, authored by Nenad Tasić, PhD, a professor at the Faculty of Philosophy in Belgrade, and Kristina Penezić of the Biosens Institute in Novi Sad, will be on display at the SASA Gallery of Science and Technology in July and August.

The exhibition is staged to mark an anniversary of great importance for Serbian archaeology, that is, 20 years since the start of new investigations of the globally important Neolithic site of Vinča. In 1998, a third series of excavations began with the objective to utilize state-of-art methods of archeological excavation and record-keeping, as well as to involve colleagues from diverse fields of science in order to obtain new archaeological findings. Displayed at the exhibition will be the methods, analyses, processes and findings obtained in the past 20 years.
Some of the most interesting finds in the past 20 years, such as ceramic figurines, miniature vessels, lids and dentalium beads, will be on display. In addition, the findings and methods of analyses performed on the material from the site of Vinča in the past 20 years will be presented at the exhibition. The involvement of experts from other scientific fields and disciplines has become a regular feature of archaeological investigations of Vinča. Numerous physical and chemical analyses of plant remains, fruits, seeds and pollen, animal bones, food remains in ceramic vessels, and sediments have been performed along with aerial photography and geophysical tests of archaeological remains that have not been excavated yet. A rather interesting fact is that organic remains have been absolutely dated, which led to the conclusion that prehistoric life at this site lasted around 800 years. Thanks to this multidisciplinary research, we are able to present everyday life at the site of Vinča during the Neolithic in much more detail. Excavations, enhanced and improved over the past 20 years with the application of state-of-art methods, have provided significant possibilities for archaeological interpretations and entirely match the international reputation the site of Vinča enjoys among experts.

The exhibition will be accompanied by lectures and workshops. Lectures on Vinča and tours of the exhibition guided by the authors and associates will be held at 6 p.m. on Thursdays, whereas workshops for children will be organized from 10.30 a.m. to 1 p.m. every Saturday. The exhibition is on display until August 10.
