Forum on Roma Studies ‘Music of the Roma: Ethnomusicological Research’

The forum on the Roma Studies titled ‘The Music of the Roma: Ethnomusicological Research’ was held at the SASA Hall 3, on 25 November 2025. The event was organised by the Board for the Study of Life and Customs of the Roma.

The forum addressed contemporary global trends in ethnomusicological research, review studies of Roma music in Serbia, and presented the results of recent fieldwork on current Roma musical practices. In addition to examining Roma hip-hop, the programme explored the use of Roma music and the Romani language in film. Special attention was given to the need for a historiography of research on Roma music and Roma orchestras.

The forum also showcased the latest issue of the journal Muzikologija, published by the Institute of Musicology of the Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts, which focuses on Roma music in the Balkans.
