Forum on Romani Studies ’The Roma on the Waves of New Protestanism’

The forum on Romani studies titled ’The Roma on the Waves of New Protestanism’ will be organised on Thursday, 23 April, at the SASA Grand Hall, at 11 a.m.

The Protestantism of the Roma includes the most recent process of mass inclusion of Serbian Roma into Protestant-oriented religious communities. The research was conducted using the method of in-depth interviews based on a structured questionnaire with baptised believers of Roma nationality affiliated with the Christian Baptist Church, Jehovah’s Witnesses, Christian Adventist Church and Evangelical Pentecostal Church in the territory of southeastern Serbia.

The main takeaways of the research point to the fact that the process of Roma protestantisation in south eastern Serbia has brought about emancipation and mitigation of social inclusion. It has also contributed to the reshaping of cultural identity and religious framework, the change of minority position and the rethinking and adaptation of Romanipen.

Serbian society has the opportunity to become more familiar with and accept Protestant Christians in their entirety through the experiences of the Roma and the positive influences that Protestantism has in their lives. Simultaneously, Roma will be enabled to become what all believing Christians strive for—to be a source of light and guidance within their communities.
