IVAN ĐAJA – THE BELGRADE SCHOOL OF PHYSIOLOGY:
FROM THE SORBONNE TO BELGRADE

FEB. 28 – MARCH 7, 2018

Ivan Đaja / Jean Giaja, (1884–1957) was a physiologist and biologist and one of the greatest Serbian and Yugoslav scientists. His major achievement was the establishment in Serbia of scientific physiology based on experimental work.  Đaja was a professor and rector of the University of Belgrade, a full member of the Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts, and the founder of the Institute for Physiology and the first University Department of Physiology in a South Slavic country.

The goal of the exhibition, organized to mark the 60th anniversary of Academician Ivan Đaja’s death, is to present to the general and scholarly public his contribution to improvements in research methodologies and to the recognition of physiology as a scientific discipline, as well as the universal application of his academic legacy in contemporary research.

In addition to providing an insight into the professional biography of Academician Ivan Đaja, the exhibition attempts to present the intertwining of a personal history with the history of the establishment of the Belgrade school of physiology by displaying testimonies from the scientist’s private life and by creating a faithful image of social and scientific trends of his time, thus making it comprehensible and suitable for systematic interpretations in view of the current achievements in the field of physiology as a scientific discipline.
