In addition to being the first Serb working in the restored Serbia to have been awarded the degree of a doctor of medicine, Jovan Stejić was also the author of the Serbian medical terminology, the first Serbian anthropologist alongside Dr. Karlo Pacek, the founder and second director of the healthcare services of the Principality of Serbia (1840‒1841, 1843‒1845), head secretary of the State Council (1841‒1842, 1845‒1853), a supporter of a reform of the Serbian language and orthography, and, above all, a great educator and a fighter for the rights of individuals and citizens. He was also one of the eight founders of the Society of Serbian Letters, the precursor of the Serbian Learned Society and the Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts. All this makes him one of the most famous, but sadly also greatly forgotten giants of Serbian history from the 19th century. This exhibition represents one of the ways in which due recognition and attention may be paid to this great man of Serbian science and culture.
