Large attendance at the exhibition of paintings Ljuba Popović (1934-2016)

A retrospective exhibition Ljuba Popović (1934-2016), curated by Nikola Kusovac and Slavica Batos, was hosted by the SASA Gallery from 4 September to 20 October. The exhibition consisted of 45 mainly large-format paintings, from all phases of the artist’s opus, thus providing a complete insight into his lavish work. All the paintings were borrowed from museums or private collections, and two smaller canvases, found shortly before his death were put on display for the first time.

During the exhibition, the Gallery featured a documentary on Ljuba Popović, by Michel Lancelot, recorded in 1975, in French production for the series ’Painters of Our Time’(Les peintres de notre temps) which had not been shown since its broadcast on French television (1976). This film is special because it is the only one demonstrating how a Ljuba Popović’s painting is being produced (the painting ’Beauty of the Devil’). Additionally, the first posthumous retrospective exhibition is accompanied by three catalogues, in Serbian, English and French.

According to the connoisseurs, this has been the finest retrospective exhibition of Ljuba Popović in Belgrade and in Serbia, and it was viewed by 57. 350 visitors which makes it by far the most visited solo exhibition of Ljuba Popović of all time, both in Serbia and France.
