Lecture A Romani Girl as Inspiration in Art
Organized by the SASA Board for the Study of Life and Customs of the Roma People, Nataša Tasić Knežević will present a lecture titled ‘A Romani Girl as Inspiration in Art’ on Tuesday, 24 September, at 1.30 p.m, at the SASA Hall 2.
According to the lecture’s abstract, women have always been marginalized in Roma culture, although they have commonly been the rock of the family. The confines of a patriarchal society have frequently shaped their destinies.
Since art often addresses the issue of gender, on this occasion the operas “Koštana” and “Carmen” were chosen as works in which this aspect is clearly emphasized. The talk will focus on the artistic portrayals of Carmen and Koštana as heroines, which represent examples of resistance to the limitations imposed by social norms and restrictions of patriarchal systems.
