Lecture by Professor Axel Schippers, leading expert in biohydrometallurgy
Professor Axel Schippers delivered a lecture titled ’Biohydrometallurgy – Metal Recovery with Microorganisms: Fundamentals, Process Options, and Biomining Application’ on 8 June at the SASA Grand Hall. Professor Schippers is a German microbiologist and one of the world’s leading experts in the field of biohydrometallurgy, geomicrobiology and biomining.
His scientific work focuses on the use of microorganisms in the extraction of metals from ores and waste materials, including bioleaching, biooxidation, biomining, and sustainable biotechnological processes in mining.
He studied biology at the University of Hamburg, where he earned his doctorate in 1998 with a dissertation on the microbiological oxidation of metal sulphides. Following postdoctoral research and training at the Max Planck Institute for Marine Microbiology, he joined the Federal Institute for Geosciences and Natural Resources (BGR) in Hanover. Since 2007, he has served as Head of the Department of Geomicrobiology, and in 2011, he was appointed Associate Professor at Leibniz University Hannover.
He is the author and editor of numerous scientific publications and books in the fields of geobiotechnology and biohydrometallurgy, which represent a significant contribution to the development of modern technologies for obtaining critical mineral raw materials.
