Lecture ‘In Search of Something’ by Richard Deacon
One of the most renowned sculptors of the modern era Richard Deacon (born in Wales in 1945) will deliver a lecture titled ‘In Search of Something’ on Tuesday, 17 September, at the SASA Grand Hall, at 5.30 p.m. His lecture will be followed by a solo exhibition of the same name, opening just two days later on Thursday, 19 September, at the DOTS Gallery in Lower Kalemegdan at 7 p.m.
Richard Deacon is a leading British sculptor and winner of numerous, prestigious awards. Throughout his decades-long career, he has distinguished himself by his unique sculptural approach characterized by constant play with the use of various materials such as laminated wood, polycarbonate, fabric and clay. He has continuously combined organic forms and technical elements and established a well-thought relation toward the language as a structure through which he seeks and builds meaning within his abstract body of works.
Deacon’s oeuvre cannot be confined to a single stylistic label or theme due to its exceptional fluidity in approach, which is shaped by the selection of the material itself at the beginning of the creative process. Boldness in artistic experimentation and distinctive drawing are recognized as the only constant in the artist’s work.
Richard Deacon has been well-established in the visual identity of Belgrade, thanks to the sculpture ‘Odande-dovde’ (From There to Here) created in collaboration with Serbian sculptor Mrđan Bajić and unveiled in Kalemegdan in 2019.
