Lecture on Contemporary Migrations of the Roma from Serbia by Osman Balić
Organized by the SASA Board for the Study of Minorities and Human Rights, Osman Balić will deliver a lecture titled “Contemporary Migrations of the Roma from Serbia” on Tuesday, March 11, at 12:30 p.m. at SASA Hall 2.
The results of the latest population census along with rare studies on the contemporary migrations of Roma in Europe and Serbia, indicate that they are driven by economic factors in non-consolidated democracies in the Eastern European countries.
The disregard for the necessity of continuing social inclusion measures encompassed by the Decade of Roma Inclusion and refusal to improve the quality of housing, the legalization of Roma settlements, and efforts to combat discrimination and segregation, further contribute to the ongoing migration of Roma from Serbia and Europe to Western Europe and North America.
Certain trends within Roma communities suggest that migration has, to some extent, contributed to their emancipation, albeit new problems in the Roma integration in the EU countries have emerged.
