Petnica science center – 35 years

April 21 – 29, 2018

Author: Vladimir Pecikoza
Organizer: Petnica Science Center

Petnica Science Center has been the most successful experiment of our education system in the past several decades. Utilizing experimental work methods, placing knowledge above certificates, degrees and inflexible curricula, encouraging creative thinking and deduction and intermingling different age groups, Petnica Science Center has demonstrated that it is possible to organize a different education process by giving priority to the motivation of the participants rather than to the pressure of formality. Even though motivation is an important criterion for those who are admitted to study groups, great attention is paid to arousing students’ interest in their successful involvement in complex scientific processes, leading them to initiate their own, individual research projects through which they will master various research methods and techniques as they are faced with both foreseeable and unforeseeable difficulties. During the 35 years of fruitful and highly admirable development, Petnica Science Center has not met with full approval and continual support of the pertinent ministries, which have failed to recognize the crucial importance of additional education for curious and gifted young people. The goal of the educational activities at Petnica is the development of logical thinking, deduction processes and problem solving abilities, which distances it from the conventional teaching methods and also provides a potential for qualitative changes in the education system resulting from the speedy development of science and technology.

Many young people who then went on to engage in research work and achieved significant results, locally and abroad, took part in the activities of Petnica Science Center.
