POETICS OF DUALITY:

Researching Linear Forms in Drawing and Graphics

2 – 16 October

Authored by Stefana Jovanović

The exhibition ‘Poetics of Duality’ represents a series of works exploring linear drawing as a medium to note both tangible and intangible experiences. They examine the relationship between a drawing and the graphic technique of lithography, analysing the role technological processes play in the linear expression, as well as how the drawing itself shapes the nature of the technique.

In this context, a drawing is not regarded solely as a formal art element, but as a representation of energy as well, as an act created through participation of bodies, time and space. Movement, energy spark and repetitions as basic structures of the presented art language are explored by means of this work series. The form is understood as fluid and in constant transformation. It is open to interpretation and liberated from pre-defined, fixed meaning. This type of abstract setup requires multi-layered analysis and resists simplified interpretation.

The theoretical foundation of the works rests on two key concepts: syntropy and entropy. Syntropy (Luigi Fantappiè) features the tendency toward order and inner organisation and synergy, while entropy (Clausius and Boltzmann) denotes the measure of inner disorder in a system. These opposite principles symbolically explicate the tension present in the works – between control and spontaneity, structure and freedom, order and disarray.

The Poetics of Duality is open to the interpretation of drawings as a dynamic process, in which tangible and intangible permeate each other. These artworks do not offer obvious answers – they call for compassion, exchange and personal interpretation within a visual rhythm that unfolds between act and form.
