Round table ’Biodistrict – The Tool for Organic Production Development and Sustainable Economic Development’
The round table ’Biodistrict – The Tool for Organic Production Development and Sustainable Economic Development’ officially opens on Friday, 30 May, at the SASA Grand Hall, at 10 a.m. The event aims to promote the concept of biodistrict and the possibilities of its further development and expansion in Serbia.
A biodistrict is a geographical area where farmers, citizens, tourist operators, associations and public authorities realise a formal agreement aimed at the sustainable management of local resources, based on the principles and model of organic farming in order to boost the economic and socio-cultural development of their areas.
Biodistricts represent an innovative and sustainable approach to integrated rural development for the purpose of transforming activities in the community and food system, with organic producers playing a key role. Biodistrict goals include the valorization of local territories, the promotion of food sovereignty, and the advancement of socially sustainable-communities-oriented agriculture. They support the sustainable development of organic agriculture and promote organic and generally sustainable agricultural practices. Biodistricts adopt and apply an integrated approach to sustainable development with the goal of enhancing the quality of life, fostering social inclusion, increasing local employment and rural population numbers, and improving local food systems, guided by the ‘farm to fork’ concept.
