SASA Corresponding Member Vladan Devedžić’s Lecture on ChatGPT

Vladan Devedžić, a SASA corresponding member, is to give a lecture titled ‘ChatGPT’ at the SASA Grand Hall, on Wednesday, 31 May, at 11 a.m. It represents an introductory lecture of the series ‘Artificial Intelligence,’ which is scheduled for 2023 autumn at the SASA.

ChatGPT is a chatbot developed by the OpenAI company, using artificial intelligence (AI) technologies, and released in November 2022. The moment it was launched, it garnered wide attention, not only in scientific and expert circles but in the general public as well, since it represents an incredibly powerful application for natural language processing – it enables users to have conversations with it in natural language, it answers questions, translates texts into various natural languages, helps solve disparate and complex tasks, writes essays and poetry based on the set topic, generates programme codes, etc.

ChatGPT has been created based on Large Language Models (LLMs) types GPT-3.5 and GPT-4, by the OpenAI company, and then fine-tuned by using the so-called supervised and reinforcement technologies of mechanical learning, widely familiar in AI.

The lecture has a trifold goal:

  • To present basic ideas in a straightforward and clear-cut way about LLMs, which are a stepping stone of ChatGPT technology, their advantages and disadvantages, as well as the current state in the progression of these technologies.
  • To provide insight, through a direct demonstration, into ChatGPT possibilities in research and creative work in selected fields, shedding light on some less-known details of this application
  • To comment on technological, business and broader societal changes brought about by the emergence of ChatGPT, as well as the potential implications of further development of LLMs and AI in general.
