Scientific conference ’100 years of Paratethys’
The international scientific conference ‘100 Years of Paratethys (Laskarev, 1924) – Conceptual History and Modern Challenges’ will be held on Monday, 30 September, at 9 a.m. at the SASA Grand Hall in Belgrade. The event is organized by the Serbian Geological Society, the Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts, the Faculty of Mining and Geology, and the Museum of Natural History, Belgrade under the auspices of the Regional Committee on Mediterranean Neogene Stratigraphy (RCMNS) and the International Commission on the History of Geological Sciences (INHIGEO).
The conference commemorates Academician Vladimir Laskarev, a prominent Russian and Serbian geologist who introduced the term Paratethys to geological science, which is a large, ancient epicontinental sea in the region of present-day western and central Europe and Euro Asia. This sea disappeared a long time ago, and we also know it as the Pannonian Sea, and nowadays the only true relicts of Paratethys are the Black Sea and the Caspian Sea.
The event will feature presentations of leading European geologists from this field of study (three invited speakers) as well as 26 lectures and poster presentations by authors representing 16 countries. The participants of the meeting will explore the situation and consider further perspectives of Paratethys research from various aspects of modern geology, history of geology as well as other areas of geosciences.
