Social sciences and humanities in Serbia

The scientific gathering ‘Social Sciences and Humanities in Serbia’ organized by the Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts and the Institute of Social Sciences will open at the SASA Grand Hall, on Friday, 13 December, at 9 a.m.

The goal of the gathering is to review the position of social sciences and humanities in contemporary society, particularly in Serbia where the scientific community is facing the long-awaited thorough reforms of the scientific system. This process will take time and it is important to reevaluate, based on the facts, the place, role and development of social sciences and humanities. In addition to this, the conference will discuss the role of the social sciences – to constantly re-examine, explain and critically reflect upon the various phenomena and ever-more dynamic changes of contemporary society, marked by the rapid development of technology, but also by undermining social values ​​and natural conditions for survival. In conclusion, the lecturers will talk about domestic scientific community, reassessing its ideas and its situation.

Academician Vladimir Kostić, SASA president and Goran Bašić, PhD and the director of the Institute of Social Sciences will give opening remarks, while the introductory lecture titled ‘The Challenges of Social Sciences and Humanities’ will be delivered by Academician Ljubomir Maksimović, SASA vice-president.
