Sociopolitical and Scientific Thought of Dragoljub Jovanović

As part of the lecture series “Social and Political Thought in Serbia of 19th and 20th century”, a scientific gathering titled “Sociopolitical and Scientific Thought of Dragoljub Jovanović“ will be open at the Grand Hall of SASA on Friday, 29 March, at 10 p.m .

Dragoljub Jovanović (1895 – 1977) was a scientist, university professor and politician. Having completed his doctoral studies at Sorbonne University, he returned to Serbia and became the professor of the Faculty of Law in Belgrade. He founded the Department for Social and Cultural Activities devoted to overcoming inter-ethnic differences. In the Kingdom of Yugoslavia, he was forced out of the Faculty and convicted several times for his political actions.

He founded and presided over the People’s Peasant Party. After the Second World War, he was a member of Parliament of DFY (Democratic Federal Yugoslavia), nevertheless, he continued to criticize the regime and advocate parliamentary democracy. He was convicted to nine years in prison in 1947, for alleged “high treason”. After being released from prison in 1956, he continued to engage in scientific and literary work. However, he was mostly politically and socially isolated. He died in 1977, but he was posthumously rehabilitated in 2009.

The political activity of Dragoljub Jovanović will be presented at the gathering, as well as his scientific contribution and the conditions in pre- and post-war Yugoslavia. The gathering is organized by the Board for Philosophy and Social Theory of the SASA Department of Social Sciences.
