Statement from the SASA Executive Board

The SASA Executive Board has endorsed the recommendation of the Academy Board for Higher Education to share with the public the Board’s general stance regarding the ongoing student protests and events at Serbian universities. The statement outlines the following:

During the regular session on 12 December, The Academy Board for Higher Education of SASA expressed its support to students in their protests and voicing their dissatisfaction. The Board maintains it is positive that young people pursuing higher education on whom the future of our country mostly depends have their own views on the society in which they live and are willing to express those views openly and assertively.

The members of the Academy Board for Higher Education of SASA strongly oppose everyone who prevents the students from expressing their opinions and demands. They emphasize that in a society that regards itself as democratic, it is entirely unacceptable to witness incidents of threats, physical assaults on students, or any actions that compromise their safety. Simultaneously, the Board has condemned all those who exploit students’ efforts thus devaluating their genuine social activism by using them as tools for political gain.
