Symposium ‘Obesity, Metabolic Syndrom and Pre-Diabetes’

The symposium ‘Obesity, Metabolic Syndrom and Pre-Diabetes’ opens at the SASA Grand Hall on Friday, 1 November.

Obesity is a multi-factor, chronic, recurrent disease, marked by abnormal and/or excessive fat tissue accumulation endangering health, increasing susceptibility to severe long-term medical complications and lowering life expectancy of an individual. Widely regarded as a precursor to other diseases, obesity can lead the type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease and fatty liver disease, renal insufficiency, and cancers.

Despite being acknowledged as a chronic disease, current clinical guidelines and treatments for obesity have yet to align with standardized chronic disease protocols common for other chronic diseases. In many protocols, obesity diagnosis is still based almost exclusively on Body Mass Index (BMI) which doesn’t fully account for the fat distribution and tissue function, both of which affect disease severity.. Additionally, the indications for the use of various, now available therapy approaches in the treatment of obesity are mainly based on anthropometric measures and not on full clinical evaluations of individuals. This approach contrasts with other chronic disease protocols, which offer clear therapeutic indications and treatment goals, including escalation strategies when initial treatment targets are unmet.

The Symposium  ‘Obesity, Metabolic Syndrom and Pre-Diabetes’ aims to promote the development and application of clinical guidelines for obesity which are to be aligned to existing procedures for other adult chronic diseases.
