As part of marking 100 years of work of the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Belgrade, the symposium ‘Trends and Update in Medicine’ was organized at this institution in the period 6 – 10 December. One of the mini-symposiums, held on 8 December, was dedicated to Academician Vladimir S. Kostić, SASA President, on the occasion of the  40th anniversary of his work at the Faculty. The contributions of Academician Kostić were discussed, both as a professor who considerably advanced education at the School of Medicine, and as a physician, focusing particularly on his introduction of new methodologies in a genetic laboratory and setting up a great number of laboratories, some of which are the Laboratory for Clinical and Experimental Neurophysiology and the Centre at the Neurology Clinic of the University Clinical Centre of Serbia.

Particular attention was paid to Academician Vladimir S. Kostić’s cooperation with colleagues from abroad and his contribution to the world’s research in the field of neurodegenerative diseases and movement disorders. As the participants of the symposium declared, Academician Kostić had provided massive momentum as a scholar who had been conducting basic research in neurodegenerative diseases, as well as in research in the following fields: Parkinson’s disease, Parkinsonism, dementia, dystonia, and ataxia.  In the end, the audience was addressed by Academician Kostić himself, who summed up his impressions of almost half a century of work spent at the School of Medicine, where he graduated, received his masters and doctoral degrees and became a doctor and, where, finally, he achieved extraordinary professional results.
