’Updates in Diabetes 2025’, Lecture by prof. Chantal Mathieu, PhD
As part of the lecture series ’Updates in Diabetes 2025’, prof. Chantal Mathieu, PhD, will give a lecture titled ’Precision Medicine in Type 1 Diabetes’ on Thursday, 20 November, at 2 p.m. at the SASA Grand Hall.
Based on the growing insights in the pathogenesis of type 1 diabetes (T1D), we have now come in a position to introduce precision medicine in T1D. Novel biomarkers, such as autoantibodies, allow the diagnosis of the disease in early, presymptomatic stages and emerging biomarkers, e.g. microRNA’s may further aid in predicting progression of the beta-cell destruction. Also the introduction of novel technologies like continuous glucose monitoring systems allow better individualization in the prediction of evolution of beta-cell destruction. Evidence from European projects like INNODIA and EDENT1FI make this field progress. Finally, precision medicine will also help in understanding and predicting the response to disease modifying therapies in T1D and thus contribute to personalization of therapies.
