Celebrating the 200^th anniversary of the birth of Ljubomir Nenadović

A ceremonial session marking the 200^th anniversary of the birth of Ljubomir Nenadović will take place on Tuesday, 29 September, in the Grand Hall of the Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts, at noon.

Ljubomir Nenadović (1826–1895) was one of the most significant Serbian writers of the second half of the 19th century. As a participant in the educational, cultural and political life of his time, he held several senior positions in state administration, serving as an official in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, secretary and head of the Ministry of Education, a member of the Central School Fund Delegation, and secretary of the Serbian embassy in Constantinople.

He was elected a full Member of the Society of Serbian Letters in 1848 and served as its president in 1860. In 1864, he became a full member of the Serbian Learned Society, and in 1887 he was elected a full member of the Serbian Royal Academy.

He began his literary career as a poet and also wrote short stories, critical and journalistic works, history textbooks, and translated works from several foreign languages. Travelogues hold a special place in his opus, including Letters from Germany, Letters from Switzerland, Letters from Italy, and Letters from Cetinje. In Serbian literary history, he is considered the founder of the modern travelogue.

The ceremonial session will feature speeches by the following: Academician Matija Bećković, Academician Jovan Delić, and Professor Radoslav Eraković.
