Centenary of the birth of Academician Radoslav Anđus

A ceremonial session marking the 100^th anniversary of the birth of Academician Radoslav Anđus will be held on Wednesday, 30 September, at noon, in the Grand Hall of the Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts.

Radoslav K. Anđus (1926−2003) was one of the most prominent Serbian biologists and physiologists of the 20th century, whose greatest contribution was in the establishment and development of the Belgrade School of Physiology.

He was a professor, vice-dean and director of the Institute of Physiology at the Faculty of Natural Sciences and Mathematics of the University of Belgrade. He also taught at the Department of Psychology of the Faculty of Philosophy and History, in postgraduate programmes at the Centre for Multidisciplinary Studies, as well as at the Faculty of Natural Sciences and Mathematics of the University of Novi Sad. He held a number of positions in scientific and research institutions. He served as director of the Siniša Stanković Institute for Biological Research and of the Centre for Multidisciplinary Studies of the University of Belgrade, and he was one of the founders of the Institute of Marine Biology in Kotor (now the Institute of Marine Biology).

He was elected a corresponding member of the Serbian Academy of Sciences in 1959 and a full member of the Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts in 1970 as a member of the Department of Natural Sciences and Mathematics. From 1989, he was a member of the Department of Chemical and Biological Sciences. He was a member of several boards within the Academy.

He achieved internationally recognised results in the fields of thermophysiology, bioenergetics, neuroendocrinology, biophysics, fish biology and aquaculture. Through his research on deep hypothermia, temporary loss of vital functions and resuscitation, he produced the most significant scientific results, thereby laying the foundations of cryopreservation. His experimental findings laid the groundwork for further research on hibernation, temperature adaptation, acclimatisation and cryonic protection of the body from decay.

He is a recipient of numerous recognitions and awards for scientific achievements. Among his decorations are the Medal for Merit to the People, the Order of the Republic with a Silver Wreath, and the Order of Labour with a Red Banner.

Academician Radoslav Anđus was a world-renowned scientist who, through his research and teaching, and through the establishment and development of scientific institutions, left an indelible mark and lasting contribution on the development of the Belgrade School of Physiology, which earned him recognition and respect in the international scientific community.

The ceremonial session will feature addresses by Academician Bogdan Šolaja, Academician Milena Stevanović, Željko Vučinić, PhD, Professor Slobodan Macura, Professor Marina Marjanović and Aleksandar Hegediš, retired principal research fellow.
