Conference ’Archaeology and Society’

The conference ’Archaeology and Society’ will take place on Friday, 30 October, in the SASA Grand Hall at 9 a.m.

As a discipline which studies past societies through their material remains, archaeology significantly contributes to the study of cultural patterns, historical processes and collective identities. It plays, therefore, a great role in the understanding of contemporary society. At the same time, society shapes archaeological practice through its policies, particularly those concerning research funding, the protection and management of cultural heritage, and efforts to interpret and use the past in education and contemporary political discourse. For these reasons, the role and applications of archaeology in modern times are of extraordinary importance.

The conference will explore various aspects of archaeological practice through three interconnected thematic sessions: Major National Archaeological Projects: Current State and Future Prospects; Rescue Archaeology: Between Legislation and Practice; and Archaeology, Cultural Heritage and the Public: Interpretation, Revitalisation and Dissemination.

The discussions will address questions concerning the place of archaeology in contemporary society, the challenges facing archaeologists and the prospects for archaeological research in Serbia. The conference will also consider how the impact of archaeological findings can be used more effectively to deepen our understanding of the past and develop new historical narratives.

The event will be streamed here.
