International conference ELMINA 2022 – 22 – 26 August

The second international conference titled ’Electron Microscopy of Nanostructures – ELMINA2022’, organized by the Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts and the Faculty of Technology and Metallurgy of the University of Belgrade, is to be held on the premises of the SASA, between 22 -26 August. The opening ceremony is scheduled for Monday, 22 August, at the SASA Grand Hall, at 9 a.m.

The conference will feature plenary lectures delivered by top-notch researchers from world-renowned universities and research laboratories (Berkley, Stanford, Oxford, Cambridge, Madrid, Osaka, Tokyo, Graz, EMPA, EPFL, Max Planck). Furthermore, young scientists, both domestic and foreign, will have an opportunity to showcase their results in the field of applied electron microscopy, thus contributing to the mission launched in the first half of the 20th century by Ernst Ruska, a Nobel Prize laureate for breakthroughs in electron optics, who also designed the first electron microscope.

Electron microscopes are very interesting and complex instruments which can be used to investigate the structure and chemical composition of substances, at a high resolution, in a wide range of disciplines: materials science, physics, chemistry, metallurgy, geology and biomedical sciences. The impact of electron microscopy and scientific disciplines which employ it is tremendous and diverse: from the clothes we wear, devices we use, and food and drugs we consume, to the understanding of the living world utilizing cell, tissue and microorganism analysis. Electron microscopy facilitates a clear understanding of the structure-properties relations – the application of a vast array of materials up to an atomic scale.

In addition to being employed in research laboratories and universities, electron microscopy has become an indispensable research discipline in the industry as well, first and foremost in the electronic industry, analysis of exploitation failures and process control in transport systems, chemical, automotive and textile industries and pharmacology.
